Narrow loss for Bulls
COBDEN Knights’ division one side broke the club’s 23-year drought with a premiership win over Pomborneit last weekend.
Playing in front of a large home crowd on Saturday, the Knights thrilled their supporters with a narrow 17-run win.
Having won the toss and elected to bat first, the Knights openers Matthew Boyle (27) and Jonty Robertson (10) were dismissed early, leaving the Knights at 2/47.
Matthew Kemp rose to the occasion and added 77 from 109 balls faced in an impressive innings that included nine boundaries.
Team-mate Kaplan McCann made quick work with the bat, adding 58 from 77 deliveries which included four boundaries and a six.
Jono Benallack finished unbeaten on 22 while Angus Uwland added 23 to have the Knights at an impressive 6/236 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Pomborneit ensured the game was going to go down to the wire, with middle-order batsman Tharaka Sendanayake making a quick-fired 75 from 67 deliveries – including five boundaries and three sixes.
Cobden’s bowlers kept the Bulls’ batsmen on their toes with accuracy in front of the wickets and were well supported by some fine-tuned fielding.
Angus Uwland finished the day with figures of 3/34 from nine overs while Matthew Harkin 2/40, Jackson Rock 2/32 were also effective.
Wickets also fell for Parker Walsh 1/32 from six and Matthew Boyle 1/35 from six.
The Knights contained Pomborneit to 10/219 after 48 overs, earning division one premiership glory.
With 77 runs to his name, Matthew Kemp was named player of the match.
