Native trees get planted at Lake
LAKE Bullen Merri’s southern beach is looking a lot greener thanks to the hard work of the South Beach Committee of Management.

LAKE Bullen Merri’s southern beach is looking a lot greener thanks to the hard work of the South Beach Committee of Management.
Native trees were planted on the south beach of the lake over the weekend, with more expected to be planted in the coming weeks.
Three acacia melanoxylon blackwood and 13 eucalyptus ovata swamp gums, each measuring close to two metres high, were planted by a team of volunteers.
Committee president Phil Russell said the planting looks “fantastic”.
“We’ve got such a good committee up at South Beach at the moment, and they’re looking for whatever ways they can to improve the area up there, and one of the idea was to get some more native
plants up there, not only for how the place looks, but just to provide a bit of shade and improve the facility in general,” he said.
“We applied for a grant through the Corangamite Shire, for an environmental grant, and we successful. We needed a co-contribution as such between the committee and the shire.
“The project got delayed a little bit because of the boat ramp being built up there, so the shire comminuted to support us through that.
“We were able to get half of the established trees in over the weekend.”
Mr Russell extended his gratitude towards the volunteers who helped in the planting of the trees.
“It’s just another example of volunteers in the community putting aside some of their own personal time to do benefits for the community, and we have lots of them,” he said.
“Whether it be sporting clubs, or other service clubs around town and we’re just one of many groups around that really love our town and want to do our bit.”
The committee plans to plant the remaining 50 allocasuarina verticillata drooping sheoak hiko and 50 banksia marginata hiko in the next few weeks.
