Another term: This term will see Geraldine Conheady, Jo Beard, Nick Cole, Laurie Hickey, Jamie Vogels, Ruth Gstrein and Kate Makin continue as councillors for the Corangamite Shire.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) declared the final election results at the Killara Centre.

It was the first election under the new seven-ward structure which was implemented in line with recommendation of the VEC.

All members of the previous council were re-elected to represent their communities for the next four years.

Councillors for this term are:

  • Cooriemungle Ward - Jamie Vogels;

  • Gnotuk Ward - Ruth Gstrein;

  • Lake Elingamite Ward - Kate Makin;

  • Lake Keilambete Ward - Geraldine Conheady;

  • Leura Ward - Laurie Hickey;

  • Mt Elephant Ward - Nick Cole; and

  • Tandarook Ward - Jo Beard.

Councillors were sworn in at a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday, where a new mayor and deputy mayor were elected for a term of one year.

Cr Makin was elected as mayor for a second term, thanking her fellow councillors for having confidence in her ability to lead for the next 12 months.

“In the year ahead, we have significant opportunities to build on the momentum we’ve created,” she said.

“We are entering a period where our decisions will be pivotal in shaping Corangamite Shire for future generations.

“Whether it’s enhancing infrastructure, supporting our agricultural backbone, or further promoting tourism, I am committed to steering our council with the experience, stability, and vision needed to make impactful, sustainable progress.

“My approach has always been grounded in accessibility, transparency, and accountability.

“I’ve made it a priority to be available to our community, listening to their concerns, and ensuring that their voices are heard within these walls.”

Cr Hickey will also be continuing in his role, being elected as deputy mayor at the meeting.

“After a year serving previously as deputy I have realised the role is more than stepping up when the mayor is unavailable,” he said.

“I’m here to support the mayor and support my fellow councillors so that the community will be better served over the next 12 months.”

Corangamite Shire chief executive officer David Rae congratulated the councillors and thanked all of the candidates who had nominated.

“Being a councillor is a big commitment of time and energy,” he said.

“We appreciate that they are prepared to make that contribution.

“It’s a really important part of the local democratic process.

“It’s always an exciting time to commence a new term and the staff and I are looking forward to working with the new council.”
