New mindfulness program launches

THE Camperdown and District Community House is inviting residents to take some time in the local botanic gardens for a new initiative in partnership with Innerbloom Gardening Therapy.

Two Botanic Mindfulness sessions have been established for Thursday, January 23 and Tuesday, February 11, aiming to encourage residents to take time to slow down and make time for themselves.

Community House coordinator Emily Mercer said the initiative focuses on the organisation’s core areas of individual and community health and well-being and connection.

“We have been wanting to host events and activities for many years in the incredible botanic gardens we are so lucky to have in Camperdown - this new initiative is the perfect opportunity and we hope this will be the first of many,” she said.

“Innerbloom Gardening Therapy provides a range of individual and group activities that harness the healing power of nature to nurture mental health and wellbeing.

“There is an enormous amount of research that demonstrates the benefits of exposure to the natural world, as well as the benefits of just slowing down and taking time out from our busy lives.”

The sessions will include a nature journaling exercise led by Innerbloom’s Kim Cragg, accompanied by sound bowl meditation led by Camperdown resident Angela Preiss.

“Nature journaling is taking a notebook and some simple art supplies out into nature and using words, pictures and numbers to describe what you notice, what you wonder about and what things remind you of,” Ms Mercer said.

“You don’t have to be a perfect artist to be able to do this. It’s just for you.

“The sounds produced by sound bowls are thought to help focus the mind and deepen meditation.

“Singing bowls are also used in traditional healing practices, creating vibrations believed to restore balance and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit.”

The sessions will run from 10-11.30am on Thursday, January 23 and 3-4.30pm on Tuesday, February 11 at a cost of $20 per person.

Bookings can be made online at https://www.trybooking.com/CXYLM for the January 23 session and https://www.trybooking.com/CXYLQ for the February session, or by contacting Ms Mercer on 5593 1403.
