New signage for Mt Elephant
OUTDOOR enthusiasts will be able to learn more about Mount Elephant thanks to updated signage recently installed by the Mount Elephant Community Management committee.
The sign at the entrance, a wayfinding sign and five smaller interpretive signs, were replaced thanks to funding from Cobden and Camperdown Community Bank, Berrybank Wind Farm’s grants program and Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal.
Mount Elephant Community Management treasurer Lesley Brown said the project costed a total of $34,000, and the committee were pleased with the final result.
“We’re very pleased because the other signs we had were there for 24 years, so they were getting weather-worn, rusty and worn out,” she said.
“We’re very pleased to make the mount look nice again with the new signs and the updated information.
“Over the years, we’ve gotten more walking tracks and improved our pre-existing tracks.
“The maps we have on the signs will now reflect that and people will be able to find their way around the mountain.”
The updated signs will also feature information on the committee’s relationship with conservation organisation Trust for Nature and the mount’s connection with artist Eugene von Guerard.
One sign features a painting of Mount Elephant as it was in 1857 painted by von Guerard.
Signs have also been updated with the logos of the mount’s new sponsors.
Mrs Brown said the design of the signs remained the same but hoped the upgraded signs would last another 25 years.
