TERANG Squash Club are hoping to attract junior members to ensure the club has a bright future.

Terang Squash Club member Mark Smith said the club was open to all ages and abilities for another year of pennant action.

“We’re trying to encourage juniors to come along,” he said.

“We have pennant every Wednesday from 6.30pm and practice every Tuesday at 7pmat the Terang squash courts on Estcourt Street, opposite the Terang Co-op Rural Store.

“One of our big goals is to establish another pennant for juniors, or even a women’s pennant.

“We want to encourage the youngest generation to play because it helps to make sure the club will be around a long time.”

Mr Smith said squash clubs had already folded in Camperdown and Mortlake, and Warrnambool recently saw two of its courts discontinued.

He said without new membership driving participation, squash would be among the latest clubs to close down in country communities.

“It’s a great club to be apart of because there’s competitive spirit and games, but it’s also a very friendly environment,” Mr Smith said.

“Everyone encourages each other and on pennant night you might be playing someone in a close match, then afterwards sharing helpful tips and pointers, and a few laughs.

“No matter your skill level, there’s always someone there to help you get better.”

Mr Smith said the club was open to players of all ages and abilities, with an inclusive and welcoming environment which will cater the pennant to its players.

“Everyone is welcome from all ages and abilities, from beginner to expert,” he said.

“We could also consider expanding to cover racquetball as well.

“I’m sure some of the squash players wouldn’t mind, it’s an entirely different game which is a little slower paced; older generations tend to enjoy racquetball as it’s a bit bouncier and gives you time to make shots.

“It’s also great for learning the ropes.”

Mr Smith said squash was an ideal winter game as players get inside, away from the elements, and provides a high-cardio workout for those hoping to get in to summer shape.

“It’s very high intensity, a great workout and it’s a game anybody with any ability can play,” he said.

“Anyone interested in playing can give me a call on 0415 318 809 or come along to practice on a Tuesday evening.”

“Members are also welcome to come along and use the courts as much as they would like.”
