Offal spill sees highway closed
EIGHT Country Fire Authority (CFA) units were called to a rather smelly mess last Friday when a truck lost its load.
Crews were called to the incident in Pomborneit at around 7am on Friday, March 7, with 10 square metres of offal and pig faeces spilled over the Princes Highway.
CFA District 6 assistant chief fire officer Craig Brittain said the spill covered both sides of the highway, resulting in a closure while crews worked to wash the mess away.
“We’re pretty lucky because one car skidded through it – there were no accidents out of the incident,” he said.
“A number of brigades responded and supported the event by blocking off the road both ways.
“Then they commenced washing down the road until the roads authority came on scene.
“We continued to assist and wash off the offal on the road until it was cleaned up, and then the police reopened the road.”
CFA units worked for four hours to clean the mess, with the smell from the incident expected to linger for some time.
Mr Brittain said the CFA was proud of its volunteers, who leave their family, friends and workplaces to attend incidents across the district.
“CFA is very proud of them, and the communities should also be proud of them,” he said.
