Offshore drilling commences

FURTHER drilling of the Otway Basin off the coast of Port Campbell is scheduled to commence this coming September.

According to a project update released by ConocoPhillips Australia, the Transocean Equinox rig is scheduled to drill the first two wells for the company before the end of the year.

“ConocoPhillips Australia is progressing its plans to explore for natural gas in the Otway basin to supply the domestic market,” a ConocoPhillips company spokesperson said.

“The Transocean Equinox rig is scheduled to start work for ConocoPhillips Australia in September 2025 – weather and operational conditions permitting.

“All activities will be undertaken in accordance with the approved environment plan and the rig will drill two wells in the Otway Basin before the end of the year.

“Anchors and mooring chains will be deployed by a vessel in August 2025 for the first well, which is approximately 55 kilometers from Port Campbell.

“Should exploration prove successful natural gas will be piped to the mainland and will directly supply Victoria and the east coast domestic market.”
