Old senior citizens part of rezoning

THE former Timboon senior citizens site will be rezoned from public park and recreation zone to public use zone under an amendment to the Timboon Precinct Plan.

At last month’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, councillors were presented with a report recommending council seek authorisation from the Minister of Planning for Planning Scheme Amendment C68.

This amendment would include the rezoning of the senior citizens which would provide the opportunity to upgrade and enhance the space for public use.

Councillor Jamie Vogels moved the motion and said this was an opportunity for Timboon to grow.

“I want to acknowledge the Timboon community, the local businesses and the project working group who’ve all had a hand in shaping the precinct plan, and the folks who turned up to workshops, shared ideas and were honest about what they wanted for the future of the town centre,” he said.

“This input has guided every step of this work – the rezoning of the former senior citizens centre is simply the next practical step in putting that shared vision into action.

“The site is identified as a key opportunity to create a multipurpose community and commercial facility, support local activities, business growth and the community use to enable future use of this.”

Councillor Jo Beard seconded the motion and agreed with Cr Vogels.

“I just think it’s great that we can take advantage of the fact that most of the hard work had already been done through this amendment process,” she said.

“This is an anomaly, you could almost call it an opportunity as well, where we’re able to add this particular piece to get rezoned onto the already awaiting C68 that’s before the Minister.

“I think we’re fortunate that as a small piece it would have been probably lost in translation somewhat whereas because it’s now going to combine with the existing C68 amendment process.

“I think hopefully it will be streamlined a lot better and this is a great opportunity for the township of Timboon and for commercial business to be able to operate out of that infrastructure there.

“As I said, the hard work’s already done, this is just to try and fast track this part of this little missing piece now.”

The motion was moved unanimously.
