Ongoing success for the markets

THE Mortlake Markets have wrapped for another year, with organisers pleased with the success of the season.

This season saw five markets held between December and June, with one cancellation in May due to severe weather.

The Mortlake Markets offer a wide variety of stalls each month, aiming to offer a little something for everyone in addition to a range of fundraising initiatives such as having raised money for Mortlake College’s Relay for Life efforts in February and the donation of proceeds from the March lucky market prize to the Mortlake area Good Friday Appeal.

Mortlake Community Development Committee member Jutta Larcombe said all involved were pleased with another successful season.

“It has been very busy,” she said.

“We had a washout last month due to the rain but, other than that, we’ve had 40-odd stalls each month, which has been really good.”

Ms Larcombe said the markets remained a popular monthly event on the Mortlake calendar, with strong attendance and positive reports from stallholders.

“There’s been plenty of people,” she said.

The final market for the season, held on Monday over the King’s Birthday long weekend, drew a strong showing of support.

“On any given week it can be a bit quiet early on but after church services finish we tend to see people come along.

“It’s been quite good.”

The final market for the year, prior to the event closing down for the winter, was held on Monday with a bumper showing as one of three events being held within walking distance.

“The King’s Birthday long weekend is always successful for us,” Ms Larcombe said.

“It’s all been quite good.

“We usually see an influx of people coming through over the long weekend, especially with the Mortlake Art Show and Creative Arts Exhibition helping to draw viewers in.

“We also had a new stallholder who was selling barbecued meats.

“He usually would sell in Halls Gap but I struck up a conversation, standing close because he had the fires going, and he said it was the first time he’d been to Mortlake.

“It is good to see when something new comes along and proves popular with everyone.”
