Open debut continues family tradition
FIFTEEN year-old Madi Lucas made an impressive debut in Camperdown’s Open netball side last weekend.

Lucas lined up with the Magpies on Saturday in their round one home game against Terang Mortlake at the Leura Oval.
While the day marked the first of no doubt many for the talented teen in the Open side, it was also made extra special for Madi and her family as it marked the first time three generations of the one family have played Open netball for the club (and possibly the league).
Madi is the daughter of Rachel Hall and granddaughter of Kathy Hall – both have a long-standing connection to the club.
“I played 250 odd games with Camperdown, about 100 of those in seniors, and mum (Kathy) is a life member of the club and also played all her senior netball with the Magpies,” Rachel said.
“Our family connection to the club also extends to my two sisters, Stacey and Caitlin, who both played with Camperdown. They’re now playing close to home in Birregurra and made the trip down on Saturday to watch Madi which was special.”
After playing a full game in defence for the Magpies’ under 17 side last Saturday, Madi then took her spot in the Open side for another four quarters in defence.
“She did really well,” Rachel said.
“She absolutely loves playing with (fellow defender) Rosie Pickles who matches Madi’s intensity and energy very well on court.”
Madi’s netball career began at the age of five when she joined Camperdown’s NetSetGo program.
Keen to break her family’s tradition of playing defence, Madi spent her early seasons on court wearing a goal attack bid.
But the tall and agile player was destined to become a defender.
“She’s about six foot, very agile and handy under the ring – she’s really found her place as a strong defender.
“And although they didn’t have a win, it was certainly a very special day for Madi and our family on Saturday.”
Camperdown’s Open netballers went down to the Bloods by just two goals, 42-40.
