Playing last season’s premiers Forest Rangers, the Lions’ division one men’s team took it right up to the home team, losing 4-3.

“It was a big stage for the club to step on to, everyone was nervous before the game but we were happy with how competitive we ended up being,” division one player and club president Jamie Norton said.

“We were in awe walking around their awesome facilities at the home of soccer in Ballarat.”

The nerves continued early in the game as the Lions conceded an early goal but then settled and equalised, going in at one all at half time.

With five minutes remaining in the second half the scores were tied up at three goals each, the Rangers scoring the winning goal with a penalty kick with three minutes remaining.

Happy with the step up to the higher standard competition, Norton said there was still lots of room for improvement, but he believes they will be competitive.

“We’re thankful to the association for starting us as the main game against the title holders on the premier ground, it was the ideal introduction for us,” he said.

The Lions’ division one women’s team was defeated 4-1, while its division two men’s team lost 10-1.

This week the Lions host Creswick at their Scotts Creek home pitch.
