Opinions divided on innovative seating
NEW seating at Mortlake’s Market Square has divided opinions.

The seating features a circular design in addition to technology allowing charging points for phones and built-in Wi-Fi which the public can access.
It was installed last week, with the unique design catching the eye of Mortlakians.
The installation quickly arose as a talking point on social media, with opinions mixed on the new addition.
While some have embraced the modern seating and practicality for anyone needing to charge their phone or access the internet, others feel it misses the mark in an aesthetic break from the traditional surroundings and could interfere with other uses for the space – such as during markets.
Moyne Shire Council mayor councillor Karen Foster said the seat had been funded through a Victorian Government initiative which is designed to expand free Wi-Fi in public areas.
“Funding was provided through the Victorian Government for projects that provided free public Wi-Fi services in towns,” she said.
“Moyne Shire Council identified this as an opportunity to improve digital connectivity for both residents and visitors.
“The three towns of Port Fairy, Mortlake and Koroit were selected as the larger population centres in Moyne Shire and as key visitor destinations and stop-off points.”
Cr Foster said the seating brought a touch of modernity to the space, offering innovation as a point for free technical access.
“The seating is a unique and innovative design installation that has solar powered lighting and provides free device charging and Wi-Fi,” she said.
“This aligns with the project’s goal of improving public digital access in high-traffic areas.
“There are no further works planned at this time.”
