Otway drilling to begin soon

CONOCOPHILLIPS Australia has released their updated activity timings for 2025, pushing back their starting time for exploration of the Otway basin.

It was originally reported ConocoPhillips Australia would begin work in the Otway basin in August, but a recent project update reports the work has been delayed.

“ConocoPhillips Australia is progressing its plans to explore for natural gas in the Otway basin to supply the domestic market,” a ConocoPhillips spokesperson said.

“The Transocean Equinox rig is expected to start work for ConocoPhillips Australia in October 2025 – weather and operational conditions permitting.

“All activities will be undertaken in accordance with the approved environment plan.

“The rig will drill two wells in the Otway basin before the end of the year.

“Anchors and mooring chains are expected to be deployed by a vessel in September 2025 for the first well, which is approximately 55 kilometres from Port Campbell.

“Should exploration prove successful natural gas will be piped to the mainland and will directly supply Victoria and the east coast domestic market.”
