Pancake success
THE smell of freshly-cooked pancakes filled the St Paul’s Anglican Church hall recently as the church marked Shrove Tuesday with a special lunch of sweet and savoury pancakes for the community.

Shrove Tuesday marks the day before Lent on Christian calendars, with the traditional pancake meal originating from Christians using up all their fats and eggs before beginning Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Organiser Ron Simcox said the church hosted 75 people for the lunch, which was on par with previous years.
“I think the response was very good,” he said.
“There were people from the Catholic Church, the Uniting Church, the Camperdown Bowls Club and various people from Camperdown.
“The David Newman Centre were going to have 12 there, but unfortunately four of them had to pull out because they had appointments – they came over with two staff.
“They all seemed to enjoy the various dishes that we had.
“They all seemed to have a good time, and they were chatting away.”
Attendees enjoyed a cup of tea, coffee or water alongside their pancakes, spending their time catching up with others in the community over a good meal.
The meal consisted of a main course of a savoury pancake with a choice of chicken, vegetable or beef topping and a dessert of a sweet pancake with various sweet treats on top.
Mr Simcox thanked the volunteers who helped make the day a success, including those in the kitchen who made sure there were plenty of pancakes to eat.
“They did a tremendous job setting up the day before and cleaning after everything was finished,” he said.
“It was much appreciated from us all.
“We hope to do it again next year and be bigger and better.”
