Enjoy the fellowship: Volunteers will be busy next Tuesday when the Mortlake Uniting Church hosts its annual Pancake Day sales to raise funds for the Uniting winter share appeal.

Pancake Day will be hosted at the Uniting Church Hall at 34 Shaw Street on Tuesday, February 17 from 10am-1pm.

Mortlake Uniting Church fellowship president Heather Rowe said this year’s sale would follow the same format as usual, as the committee approaches the occasion with a ‘don’t fix what isn’t broken’ mindset.

The fundraiser sees pancakes sold as part of the traditional Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, the day before Ash Wednesday when ingredients such as eggs, milk and sugar were used prior to Lent – the Christian fasting period prior to Easter.

All funds raised are donated to the Uniting Church’s winter share appeal, in which support can be offered to those experiencing homelessness when the Victorian weather turns frigid.

“Last year we had a really good response to the day, we were really rapt with it and we got to send quite a big of money away,” Mrs Rowe said.

“We’ll be delivering down the street again and we’ll be cooking pancakes at the Uniting Church Hall for anyone to come along.

“It’ll all just be the same.”

Mrs Rowe said there would be a delicious selection to cater for all appetites.

“If people come to the hall they can have a cup of tea or coffee, and ice cream or cream on their pancakes,” she said.

“We will have lemon and sugar, apple and cinnamon and maple syrup available.

“The apple and cinnamon go really nicely, it’s always popular, with freshly stewed apples.

“Especially when people can come into the hall and have a bit of ice cream with it – that makes it even nicer.”

Mrs Rowe said it was heart-warming to be able to raise funds for a good cause which directly supports those who need it most.

“The share appeal looks after those who are homeless,” she said.

“We enjoy getting to give back to the communities.”

Mrs Rowe said she hoped to see people come along for a delicious meal and good company.

“Come and enjoy morning tea or lunch – pancakes, ice cream and a cup of tea,” she said.

“Enjoy the fellowship of it too.”
