Pennant golf set to begin
WESTERN District Golf Association’s annual pennant golf season will tee off with round one this Sunday.

WESTERN District Golf Association’s annual pennant golf season will tee off with round one this Sunday.
The five round plus finals competition will be played across the next six weeks, with teams entered in three scratch and three handicap divisions.
Local clubs Cobden, Timboon and Peterborough have all entered sides and will be looking to have big seasons.
Cobden has teams in division one and three of both the scratch and handicap sections and division one scratch captain Jarrod Schill said his club was looking forward to the season.
“We’re feeling good about it and we’ve got our strongest side in for quite a few years which is good,” he said.
Schill said he had roughly nine players to choose from this year and given the talent at his disposal, he was optimistic about Cobden’s chances.
He said after winning its final game last year to avoid relegation, they are now aiming to rise up the ladder this season.
“We’re hoping to push for a finals spot,” he said.
“Port Fairy and Warrnambool are going to be our toughest opponents given they are the bigger clubs.
“But if we can win against Portland, Warrnambool’s second side and Hamilton then that might be enough to get us into the finals if results go our way.”
Cobden will open the season against Portland at Warrnambool on Sunday with Schill keen to see his side on the board early.
“We want to get the win, it doesn’t matter if it’s four and three or seven and zip, we just want to start well,” he said.
“And we just want some good individual wins across the board.”
In the lower grades, Cobden’s division three scratch side plays Lake Bolac at East Framlingham, division one handicap takes on Camperdown at Camperdown and division three handicap faces Timboon at Cobden.
Timboon has opted to forego playing two teams and will field just the one side, while Peterborough has entered sides in division two scratch and division one handicap.
The scratch team will start the year at Peterborough against Heywood, while the handicap side clashes with Port Fairy at Camperdown.
