Port join forces to fight rabbit problem
PORT Campbell residents have been called on to help tackle the ongoing rabbit infestation in the town.
Port Campbell Biolinks, with the support of the Port Campbell Progress Group, have organised two information sessions to be held to learn what households can do to help control rabbit numbers.
The sessions will both be held at the Port Campbell Arts Space at 50 Lord Street, Port Campbell.
The first session will be held on Sunday, December 10 with morning tea at 10.30am preceding the presentation at 11am.
The second session will be held on Monday, December 11 with the same start time as the first session.
Victorian Rabbit Action Network mentor Tim Bloomfield will speak at both sessions, with Corangamite Shire Council providing funding to host the sessions.
Port Campbell Biolinks member Annie Schofield encouraged members of the community to attend one of the sessions.
She said the growing population of rabbits were creating a variety of problems for the town including reducing the availability of native plants which native animals in the area depend on for their survival.
Ms Schofield said residents, land managers and government organisations have been invited to attend to form a cohesive action plan to combat the rabbit population.
“It’s quite a complex situation; there’s a lot of departments involved,” she said.
“We need a plan of attack going forward.
“We’ve been trying to get something done for four years.”
Ms Schofield said information on a variety of options to control the rabbit population would be presented.
“We need to get as many people there as possible,” she said.
“Every person in town needs to be active to get any sort of control.
“We need a plan of attack before March.”
Topics to be covered during the session will include understanding the impact of rabbits, effectiveness of the various single control measures which could include fumigation, ferreting, shooting and baiting as well as best practice rabbit management options for the long-term.
