Portland too strong for Bombers
BOMBERS senior coach Dan Casey has praised his side’s efforts against third placed Portland Tigers on the weekend.
BOMBERS senior coach Dan Casey has praised his side’s efforts against third placed Portland Tigers on the weekend.
While the Cobden side was unable to get the four points, Casey said he was extremely proud of the way his players dug deep throughout the four quarters.
“Portland is certainly a quality side and they played great footy, but I’m proud of the way our boys held on when the momentum changed,” Casey said.
“We’re lacking a couple of big key forwards to get the job done. We can get it (the footy) down there but we have to work extra hard to score.
“If we had a key target who could score five or six we’d be right up there. Portland is a quality side and I believe they’ll be up there come grand final day.”
Casey highlighted the efforts of first senior gamer Tully Darcy and Christian Koroneos, who both worked hard in the centre to replace injured ruckman Tyler Humphrey.
Final scores: Cobden Bombers 9.10.64 v Portland Tigers 14.14.98.
Goal scorers for the Bombers: Grady Rooke (2), Tully Darcy, Harrison Herschell, Joshua Hickey, Matthew Kemp, Ryleigh McVilly, Paul Pekin and Thomas Spokes.
Best players: Zac Green, Grady Rooke, Paul Pekin, Sam Thow, Ryleigh McVilly and Tarj Anderson.
After this weekend’s bye round, Cobden will take on Camperdown at home.
“We always have a great battle with the Magpies. Last time we met we won by 30-odd points from memory; we’ll be hoping to get the points again this time around.
“If we can win as many games this time as we did the previous half of the season, and perhaps pick up a few wins against some of the sides above us, we’ll be happy.”
In the reserves, Cobden defeated Portland 13.6.84 to 9.6.60.
Goal scorers: Oliver Darcy (3), Johno Benallack (2), Bradley Gillingham (2), Michael Koroneos (2), Jack Darcy, Brenton Flemming, James McVilly and Mitch Reed.
Best for the Bombers: Mitch Reed, Louis Robertson, Jack McGlade, Bradley Gillingham, Brenton Flemming and Joe Hutt.
