TERANG Probus club welcomed guest speaker Julie Rissman this week.
Julie, the daughter in law of member Joan Cain, grew up near Heywood, riding horses and shooting foxes before being sent to lady’s college.
She studied Science at Melbourne University and worked for a time testing soil and water before heading back to Melbourne University to study marketing.
It was there that she met her husband Stjohn.
Stjohn worked for Rio Tinto and when the opportunity arose to move with that boss to England and then Paris, Julie and Stjohn accepted.
During the year they lived in Paris life was kind to Julie and their son, Samuel.
They lived in a lovely home and were well catered for by the company.
Perhaps not quite so comfortable at times for Stjohn for although the Rio Tinto office was in Paris, the project they were working on was in West Africa, in an area affected by the Ebola Virus, black mamba snakes and political coups.
Julie spoke about life in Paris where the food and social integration were excellent, but she was less impressed with their bureaucracy, and she felt that our Australian systems were more sophisticated.
Julie and John now live on a farm in McArthur.
Stjohn continues to work as an engineer and their son Samuel, a talented musician, is in Year 11 at Melbourne Grammer.
While Julie kept all entertained with her stories of life in Paris, members were also presented with a slide show of many of the beautiful old houses in the section of Paris where the family lived.
