Protecting precious memories
DISTRICT residents can learn how to keep their irreplaceable photos and important documents safe in case of disasters.
Corangamite and Pyrenees Shire Councils are joining together to present free training for over 50s at Skipton Mechanics Institute Community Hall on Wednesday, March 25 from 10am−2pm.
Corangamite Shire Council chief executive officer (CEO) David Rae said the session aimed to allow older residents to protect precious memories or important documents.
“We’re no strangers to fires and floods and when things change quickly, or you can’t get home, there might be no time to save important documents,” he said.
“The ‘Scan It. Save It. Safeguard It.’ session will empower participants to turn their photo albums, documents and precious memories into secure digital copies, ready for any emergency.”
Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan said staff identified the need while working at the Skipton recovery centre following the Streatham-Yalla-Y-Poora fire.
“Pyrenees Shire Council received some funding from Good Things Foundation Australia’s Be Connected grants to run digital skills programs for over 50s in our community,” he said.

“We have since held a couple of great workshops for seniors around ways to store records, photos and other important documents, and suggested to Corangamite Shire to offer a similar session in Skipton.”
Scans can be stored on the cloud so they can be retrieved even if residents lose their phone, tablet or computer.
The event is free with lunch provided.
Bookings can be made by phoning Corangamite Shire on 5593 7100 or emailing servicenav@corangamite.vic.gov.au.
