Raising funds after friend’s diagnosis

MERCY Regional College student Annabelle Glossop will chop her hair to raise funds for research after a team mate was diagnosed with cancer.
Annabelle, a dual-code cricket and football athlete, has already raised $1900 of her $2000 goal, with funds raised as part of ‘Bellegeee’s Big Chop’ set to benefit Cancer Council.
“One of my mates was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, so I decided to chop my hair off in support of her,” she said.
“I’ll be cutting off roughly 30cm on September 13, so in the lead up I’m trying to help raise money for cancer research.”
Annabelle said she had been inspired by past examples of people being willing to shave their locks in solidarity with friends and family diagnosed with cancer.
“When I knew she had it, I knew I wanted to chop it,” she said.
“I met her through cricket and she started working down near Mortlake, so we got close when she moved to town.
“She got sick and they didn’t know what it was, so when she was diagnosed and told me I remembered that I had always said I would chop my hair if one of my mates got cancer.”
Annabelle launched an online fundraiser to assist her campaign, which she said had been well supported by the community already.
“My goal was to raise $2000 so to have already almost raised the funds was great,” she said.
“I didn’t think it would be this quick.”
Annabelle thanked those who had already donated, and encouraged others to throw their support behind the fundraiser.
“Any donation, big or small, helps cancer research,” she said.
“Thank you to everyone for the support.”
The fundraiser will remain open until ‘Bellegeee’s Big Chop’ on Wednesday, September 13.
