Recognition for local stars
MORE than 100 guests recently enjoyed an awards dinner, hosted by the Corangamite Sportsmans Club, in recognition of local sports stars.

Throughout the evening the winning ‘sports stars’ from the months of April through to September were announced, much to the excitement of the large crowd.
Along with the presentations, guest speakers Zack and Lewis Regan, and Riley Murfitt, spoke of their recent trek along the Kokoda Trail.
Congratulations to the following award winners:
APRIL
Junior Sports Star – Harrison Glennen (clay target shooting).
Harrison represented Victoria at the National Trap Championship in Perth and shot a perfect 150 in the points event, winning both junior and A grade divisions.
He also finished fifth overall in the Open division with a 51/54 in the shoot-off, was placed second in the double barrel and won the National Open title in the Deauville doubles.
MAY
Senior Sports Star – George Beasley (golf).
George won the 2025 Golf Victoria youth pennant final in Melbourne, was part of the winning Commonwealth victory against Peninsula Kingswood and played at the Port Phillip Open Amateur in May.
Senior Sports Team – Terang division three pennant (golf).
The club’s division three handicap side defeated Hamilton in Warrnambool.
The team comprised Colin Venn, Paddy O’Connor, Max Kavanagh, Paddy Scanlon and Nick Marshall.
JUNE
Junior Sports Star – Rusty Ponting (Speedway).
The Cobden star took out the Victorian Formula 500’s Junior Stampede series, won the state’s junior drivers’ aggregate and is now looking to race sprint cars this upcoming season.
In season 2024/25 he took home eight chequered flags and made 14 podium appearances from 17 starts.
JULY
Junior Sports Star – Keira Johnston (outdoor bowls).
After a successful Schools Sports Victoria trial, Keira was selected as one of four emergencies in the under 18 squad.
She won silver (as a lead bowler) in both the triples and fours events at the Pine Rivers Bowling Club’s national under 18 competition on the Gold Coast.
Her Victorian team took home gold after being named the best overall.
AUGUST
Senior Sports Star – Pam Dwyer (indoor bowls).
Pam was named VIBBA State Champion of Champions.
Senior Sports Star – Sophie Hinkley (netball).
Sophie took out the Hampden League’s Dot Jenkins Medal (Open best and fairest) with 29 votes and was named captain of the league’s Team of the Year alongside team-mate Remeny McCann.
She topped off her season by winning Cobden’s Open best and fairest.
Junior Sports Star – Leo Beasley (football).
Leo took out the Warrnambool District League’s under 15 best and fairest award with 33 votes and also won Kolora Noorat’s best and fairest and leading goal kicker awards.
Junior Sports Star – Jade Byron (netball).
Jade won the Warrnambool District League’s 13 and under best and fairest award with 40 votes and also won the award for Kolora Noorat.
She was a member of the 13 and under rep side at the association championships.
Senior Sports Team – Mungean family (indoor bowls).
All four members from the family won this year’s VIBBA mixed fours title.
SEPTEMBER
Junior Sports Star – Indi Cameron (netball).
With an incredible 30 votes, Indi won the Hampden League’s 17 and under best and fairest award and capped off a great season with the Magpies to take out the club’s best and fairest for under 17s.
Under new coach Jill Leader, Indi was also a valuable member of the club’s Open netball side.
She took up football this year and played for Terang Mortlake in the Western Victorian Women’s Football League.
She was called up for the Hampden interleague team and after booting three goals took home a ‘best on’ medal.
Junior Sports Star – Paddy Hassett (football).
Paddy won Hampden League’s under 16 best and fairest vote count with 23 votes.
He also took out his club’s under 16 best and fairest, made his under 18 debut and also played reserves – twice playing alongside his dad, Mick.
Junior Sports Team – Timboon Demons Under 13 (netball).
The Demons were Warrnambool District League premiers, earning back-to-back flags.
Vice-captain Elise Quarrell was named best on court in the grand final.
The team comprised Indii McKenzie, Elise Quarrell, Lahni Hannagraaf, Amelia Pender, Brenna Redshaw, Emily Plozza, Elizabeth Plozza, Sidney Champion, Stella Whithead, Grace Richardson and Annabelle Doolan.
The team was coached by Hayley Plozza.
Junior Sports Team – Camperdown 13 and under reserves (netball).
The young Magpies brought home a thrilling premiership win in extra time.
Centre player Zoe Unwin was named best on court.
Her fellow team-mates included Alexa Raven, Zahlia Hill, Maddie Lyne, Alice Dennis, Phillippa Murphy Reagan Webb, Ruby Johnston, Vogue Fleming and Zhai Deposoy.
The team was coached by Lauren Murphy and Nell Blake.
The sportsmans’ club will host its ‘Sports Star of the Year’ awards in December.
