POMBORNEIT’S division one side was put to the test early by Terang on the weekend.

Terang won the toss and sent the Bulls in to bat in what was the first game for season 2022 after four wash-out rounds.

The decision to put the Bulls in first proved a great call by the home side as Pomborneit slumped to 5/46 in the 17th over.

A fifth wicket partnership of 77 between Josh Place (39 from 89 balls) and Tharaka Sendanayake (48 from 83 balls which included five boundaries) rescued the innings with the Bulls posting a competitive 141.

Young fast bowler Hunter Reynolds took the early wicket of Terang opener Liam Geary, then an Easton Wood wicket and a run out saw Terang at 3/44.

A 34-run partnership between Tim Keane and Terang skipper Tyson Hay was broken by Tom Darcy via a smart stumping from Dave Murphy – as the Bulls spinners Tharaka Sendanayake (2/17 from

8.3 overs) and Danussika Bandara (1/16 from 10 overs on debut for Pomborneit) clamped down the Terang innings, eventually dismissing the home side for 111 to record a 30-run win.

Playing at home, division two was sent in to bat first by Heytesbury.

Openers Charlie Voutier and 200-gamer Wes Lenehan got the Bulls off to a flying start with an opening partnership of 44.

Voutier made 25 from 43 balls while Lenehan hit the ball well in his innings of 36 from 48 deliveries.

The momentum continued with Simon Tolland who top scored with 41 from 58 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes, while Tim Whitehead finished the innings strongly with an unbeaten 28.

Pomborneit finished the day at 8/171 after its 40 overs.

Fourteen year-old Gavin Reynolds and 15-year-old Finn Tolland, on his division two debut, were entrusted with the new ball and delivered for the Bulls – taking the first four wickets to reduce the visitors to 4/26.

Ryan Jones and Rylee Parsons worked hard with the bat for Heytesbury but once they were dismissed the Rebels lost regular wickets to be all out for 120 in 31.3 overs.

Left arm spinner Sam Whytcross took 3/30 from his eight overs, Finn Tolland 3/24 from 7.3 overs, with two wickets each to Gavin Reynolds and Stephen Walters.

Milestone man Wes Lenehan fittingly took a catch to end the game.

Division three saw Pomborneit win the toss and elect to bat first against Ecklin.

Newly promoted opener Jack Smith started the innings well for the Bulls with 19 from 33 balls but regular wickets fell at the other end, with skipper Tony Evans the only other player to reach double

figures in a disappointing batting performance.

The Bulls were all out for 94 in the 35th overs.

The Pomborneit bowlers did make Ecklin work for every run in the chase, with the home side taking 38 overs to reach the required target.

Wicket takers for Pomborneit were Donnie McInnes, Tayla Reynolds and Tony Evans with one each.

In the women’s division, Pomborneit Gold won the toss and skipper Samantha Coxon sent Irrewarra in to bat at the Colac Secondary School oval.

Coxon took the first wicket herself, bowling Irrewarra skipper Keira Thomas.

The Bulls’ pace attack then ran through the Redbacks line-up to dismiss the home team for 36 in 14.3 overs.

Tayla Reynolds recorded her best figures in women’s cricket with 4/6 from 3.3 overs, with Rachel Dendle and Nellie Sadler also taking a wicket each, and Sadler effecting a direct hit run out from square leg to the bowlers end.

In reply, Bulls opener Jessica Moulden went out forcefully, smashing 30 from 11 balls including six boundaries to pass the home team’s score in the second over before retiring in the third.

Samantha Coxon retired on 32 from 21 balls including five boundaries.

Pomborneit Gold declared the innings and game over with 16 overs, finishing on 2/117.

Pomborneit’s Maroon side won the toss and batted first at their home ground but found runs hard to come by against a disciplined Tomahawk Creek bowling attack.

Despite only losing two wickets, the Bulls could only manage 68 from their 20 overs, with opener Janelle Whitehead working hard, batting through the innings to record 26 not out.

The visitors reached 4/105 from their 20 overs in reply to record a comfortable win.

Stand-in captain Debra Reynolds was the best of the bowlers with 3/9 from three overs, with Janelle Whitehead taking the fourth wicket.
