LOCALS will be able to play their part in recycling while making an extra bit of cash.
Victoria’s container deposit scheme, CDS Vic, began last week.
The scheme will reward Victorians with a 10-cent refund for every eligible can, carton and bottle they return.
Two ‘reverse vending machines’ have been installed – one at the Cobden Golf Club and one at Timboon Fuel.
CDS Vic aims to provide shared benefits to the community, environment and economy by delivering more and better recycling and less waste with old containers becoming new ones.
To use the scheme simply return your empty drink container to a refund point.
Residents receive a 10-cent refund for every eligible container they return.
The returned container is given a new lease on life with the material recycled and remanufactured into a new product, saving it from landfill or littering the environment.
CDS Vic will target beverage containers that most commonly contribute to litter and are often consumed away from home.
This includes plastic soft drink bottles, glass beer bottles, soft drinks and alcohol sold in cans, and small fruit juice cartons.
Eligible containers include:
Non-concentrated fruit or vegetable juice;
Flavoured milk;
Beer;
Soft drink; and
Mixed spirits.
Upon returning containers to collection points, locals can choose to pocket the refund or donate it to charity.
CDS Vic is part of the Victorian Government’s $515 million investment to transform the state’s waste and recycling system.
Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos said the new CDS scheme was now open.
“(It) will reduce the amount of litter in Victoria by up to half – contributing to a more sustainable future, while putting money back in the pockets of hardworking Victorians,” he said.
“CDS Vic will maximise the number of cans, bottles and cartons being recycled into new products and keep them out of landfill.”
