Redemption for Cobden bowlers

COBDEN’S division one midweek pennant side has managed to redeem themselves with a win over top side Central.


After slipping to seventh place with a bad loss to Colac 1 the previous game, Cobden scraped in 63 shots to 59, making full use of the home ground advantage.

Janelle Rohan, Bert Strampel, John Raeside and Doreen Coverdale were unlucky in their 20-21 defeat to R. McMahon, S. Fanelli, I. McMahon and A. Bamford.

Ann Scott, Kath Spokes, Loreign Andrews and Bazil Hammond led most of the day to win 23-18 over L. Inglis, P. Howard, T. Murnane and B. Woods.

After leading early Trevor Roberts, Sue Couch, Janine Hutt and Brian Howard were pegged back to draw with C. Hanson, G. Gillespie, S. Gamble and V. Brown.

This elevates them to sixth position, equal with three other sides with two wins and two losses, but with a lower percentage.

Meanwhile at Central in Colac, Cobden scraped through winning 65-62 despite playing on Central’s home ground.

This places Cobden clearly in second place.

Ken Lynch, Paul Dwyer, Evelyn Grayland and Pam Savage lost 17-20 to J. Walter, D. Phillips, J. Dare and L. Lenehan.

Jill Lynch, Leon Carrigan, Ann Coverdale and Barry Morgan drew with E. Ivermee, B. Tucker, D. Arnall and K. Black, 25 all.

Claire Reynolds, Colin Spokes, David Childs and Colleen Johnson defeated M. Gove, J. Russell, V. Barrow and H. Tucker 23-17 to get the team home.

In weekend pennant, Cobden’s division two side has consolidated second position by defeating Lorne, at Lorne, 92-88.

Colin Hammond, Greg Rooke, Sam Thowe and Bazil Hammond went down 21-26 to L. McIlvenny, S. Donne, N. Owen and P. Steven.

Noah Mungean, Kathryn Robertson, Ashley Sinnott and Lachie Taylor also lost 17-24 to B. Weetman, P. Staley, M. Mackenzie and C. Weetman.

Nick Kemp, Terry Beasley, Murray Williamson and Tom Robertson had a good win 28-16 over P. Jacobs, A. Walls, D. Issell and R. Lloyd.

Darren Mulgrew, Brendan Hammond, Peter Richardson and Mitch Reed won 26-22 over M Causon Snr., S. Thorneycroft, K. Heathcote and K. Turner.

In division three, Cobden continues to dosey-doe with Simpson, swapping spots again, with Cobden in third after defeating Central with a resounding win 93-55 and taking all the points at Central.

Ann Scott, Ken Lynch, Colin Spokes and Janine Hutt won well, 26-11, over R. Seager, L. Armistead, N. Dowie and G. Wade.

Trevor Roberts, Kath Spokes, Don Anderson and Kevin Rundle defeated E. Ivermee, J. Langdon, J. Russell and R. Isaacs 22-16.

Janelle Rohan, Richard McVilly, Jim O’Shea and Bert Strampel won 23-13 over A. Tesselaar, M. Armistead, D. Phillips and M. McKenzie-Slattery.

David Staggard, Leon Carrigan, Paul Dwyer and Brian Howard won 22-15 against G. Finn, R. Cheshire, R. Woods and T. Sanson.

Division four played at home and were unlucky to lose by one shot to Colac 5.

Claire Reynolds, Rex Perkins, Loreign Andrews and Pam Savage lost 14-24 to M. Middleton, M. McCarthy, R. Jenkins and G. Riches.

Doreen Coverdale, Ken Farquharson, David Luker and Bill Johnson were unlucky, going down 17-18 to E. Riches, G. Riches, A. Maher and P. Maher.

Pat Hickey, Evelyn Grayland, Ken Coverdale and Des Couch did well to win 25-15 against P. McCarthy, J. Robbins, M. Turner and H. Van Es.
