Nothing done: A disgruntled resident has renewed calls for repairs on Port Campbell’s Yaruck Road after the road deteriorated further without any upgrades.

As Western District Newspapers reported in October last year, resident Caleb McKenzie put out calls for the road to be repaired as it developed potholes and was prone to becoming slippery due to mud.

Mr McKenzie is among five-six other people to live along the road, which has since deteriorated further.

He said the road was classed as a 4D road, which refers to a road that primarily provides access to undeveloped properties in rural areas and is not required to provide daily access to residences or industries, but claims council had allowed the road to deteriorate.

“The road needs repair works done, but the council don’t want to spend a cent. They reckon they have no money,” Mr McKenzie said.

“This morning (Monday, July 13) I came up the road and had trouble driving with the ute – I had to put it into four-wheel drive because of the road.

“You’ve got to get trucks in there if someone has issues to get them out.

“Council has said the residents should have gone a different way – I asked how else are they going to get in there?

“This is the sort of response we’re getting out of the shire.”

Mr McKenzie expressed anger over the state of the road, saying he had been told the state of the road would be an agenda item at a council meeting.

“I thought we were getting promised an upgrade of the road being brought to a council meeting, but they haven’t done anything about it,” he said.

“There’s nothing in writing about it.

“This year, I’m not paying my rates until something’s getting done.

“They can stick their rates notice where they sit down.

“I said if they’re not going to fix up the road, they’re not getting money out of me.”

Mr McKenzie said the road needs fixing, with limited access for those who live along the road or need access to farmland through Yaruck Road.

“Council reckons we’ve got access out the other end, but we don’t,” he said.

“They asked about the national park, but we can’t go around there.

“They said to ring them, but I said I’m not ringing them when it’s council’s responsibility.

“The McKinnons have done gravel works on part of it, and they’ve done a good job with it.

“It’s not up to the McKinnons to fix it – it’s up to the shire.”

Western District Newspapers approached Corangamite Shire Council for comment, but did not receive a response prior to deadline.
