Rough surface: Works are planned for Mortlake-Ararat Road, which has multiple sections featuring rough surface warnings.

The road surface between Mortlake and Woorndoo experienced notable deterioration during heavy rain and flooding events over 2022 and 2023.

Sections temporarily reducing the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h with rough surface warnings have been in place since.

Western District Newspapers contacted the Department of Transport and Planning earlier this month with questions surrounding the condition of the road and associated improvement works, and received confirmation works are planned – however, no timeline for when the works will be delivered was provided.

“There are future repairs planned for sections along Mortlake-Ararat Road,” Department of Transport and Planning executive director barwon south west and grampians Michael Bailey said.

“A reduced speed limit and additional warning signage is in place and we urge drivers to slow down and drive to conditions.”

Western District Newspapers understands crews inspect the sections of Mortlake-Ararat Road every two weeks and perform routine maintenance as required.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) manages over 23,000 kilometres of road network, which includes regular inspections to ensure compliance with the Road Management Act (2004), and the roads are maintained in accordance with the DTP Road Management Plan.

The Victorian Government has invested a record $964 million into maintaining the state’s road network this year, which marks the largest single-year investment in road maintenance in the state’s history.

This includes major works to rebuild and resurface the road network, improving their condition and making them more resilient and durable.
