Riordan invites community to discuss timber

IN recent years there have been community concerns about the growing investment by different elements of the Timber Industry in Corangamite Shire.

Polwarth MP Richard Riordan invited interested community members to a discussion at the Simpson Recreation Reserve to hear from locals about their views on the issue.

The discussion will be held at the Simpson Recreation Reserve on Thursday, March 14 from 1pm.

The dairy and timber industries have been long term industries across south west Victoria, and their output contributes greatly to the supply chain on a national and international level.

The forum is designed to hear concerns from the community, to help answer questions and to establish what, if any, actions the government needs to take in order to maximise the benefit of both industries in the region.

Mr Riordan said he believes farming and forestry can coexist in the region, despite concerns raised by residents, and bring many complimentary aspects for both sectors.

“There is the obvious environmental benefit, but also increased stock shelter and biodiversity as well as potential for other streams of income for landowners,” he said.

“We all want the best possible outcomes for agriculture, forestry and the communities and businesses that depend on them in the region; this meeting is about ensuring everyone is well informed about what is occurring, what isn’t occurring and where genuine opportunities lie.

“There have been genuine concerns raised by members of the community about transparency of government subsidies, and about the long-term viability of smaller towns and communities in Corangamite Shire.

“It is vital that long term investments in our region assist our region to grow productively.”
