Rising Star Award for local umpire
CAMPERDOWN netballer Sophie Conheady was named the under 19 netball Umpire Rising Star at Sunday’s Hampden league awards day.

“It was a bit of a surprise to be nominated,” Conheady said.
“It’s a credit to (league netball program umpire coordinator) Josie Logan and the work she’s put into umpire development programs.”
Conheady, who plays in the Magpies Open netball team, commenced umpiring at the age of 14.
“Dad encouraged my older sister Maggie to take up umpiring, he said it was a good bit of money and better than stacking supermarket shelves,” Conheady laughed.
“Volunteering is something our family does, it’s a good way to help out, there’s no game without umpires.”
Conheady added that umpiring had helped her own game.
“As a player it definitely helps you understand the rules a bit better.”
Camperdown’s Open netball team finished fifth in 2025, Conheady one of the many talented young players helping the Magpies rise up the ladder.
“Playing under previous coach Emily Stephens and (current coach) Jill Leader has allowed us to grow and develop.
“Jill knows netball inside out and is great at passing on that knowledge.”
Conheady was a co-coach of Camperdown’s 13 and under netball team in 2025 and is already looking ahead to next season.
“I’m busy with uni but will look to get into the gym over summer and be fit for next year.”
