Store manager Brendan Cook said the store chose to deck out in pink on Wednesday, October 15 in support of breast cancer awareness month.

“The month of October is when the McGrath Foundation raise money for cancer awareness so the girls here – driven by our staff member Marissa Nelson – thought it would be a good idea,” he said.

“We had some fundraising tins dropped off so we thought we would have a day where we could raise awareness by dressing up in pink.

“One of the girls went and did some op shopping and collected a heap of pink stuff and passed it around to all of us who didn’t own anything pink, which there was a few of us.

“The fundraising goes for the whole month of October so we will keep the tins out until then.

“If you weren’t in the store when we were dressed up in pink, you still have until the end of the month to come in and donate.”

The McGrath Foundation supports breast cancer patients with free breast cancer nurses, providing specialised care during their time of need.

Mr Cook said the cause was close to home for Ritchies staff.

“The effort was driven completely by the girls – one of our staff members who currently works here had breast cancer in the last few years and another one who resigned from her position had breast cancer around two years ago,” he said.

“To a few people here it’s quite important so if what we need to do is dress up for a day in pink and raise a bit of awareness for it, that’s the least we can do.

“The two that have had breast cancer are long-term employees of the business so whilst they were going through the treatment it wasn’t easy to watch, but thankfully both of them have come through the other side really good.”

The donation tins will remain in Ritchies IGA in Cobden until the end of October, so there is still plenty of time to pop into the store and leave a donation.
