Soldier’s Memorial Hall was a sea of colour for the 126th annual rose show with a wide variety of different cuts and arrangements displayed throughout the hall.

Mortlake Rose Show committee member Meredith Giles said the show had been a success.

“It’s been a lovely weekend,” she said.

“We’ve had lots of people though who have really liked it.

“There probably is not as many flowers as last year, but they’re beautiful.

“It certainly hasn’t been a bad year.”

This year’s winners were:

  • E.C Greenrod Perpetual Tray – Most successful exhibitor in show: Norma Parker;

  • Elizabeth Brookes Memorial Cup – Three rose: Kimberly Tebble;

  • St James Cup – Six roses: Simon Taylor;

  • Most Successful Exhibitor – Rose section: Norma Parker;

  • Moyne Shire Trophy – Best rose in show: Susan Bosch;

  • Mortlake Garden Club Prize – Collection of roses: Kimberly Tebble;

  • Griffin Cup – Most successful exhibitor in cut flower section: Rae Risk;

  • Edna Spokes Memorial Trophy – Aggregate floral design: Jo Kenna; and

  • Nettie Draffen Memorial Prize – Best entry of floral design: Marilyn Richardson.

A highlight of the event was the creation of garden saucers by students at St Colman’s Primary School, who creased small floral arrangements on a saucer.

In addition, the committee also thanked St Colman’s Primary School for hosting Kidz Corner, which gave visiting children the opportunity to sit down and draw flowers of their own.

“St Colman’s had a buddy-system with their older and younger grades to build up garden saucers,” Mrs Giles said.

“I’ve had numerous young kids come in from the community, who brought in their own little saucers, so we did a People’s Choice Award.

“They have all done such a fabulous job and the colours are wonderful.

“It’s lovely to see the kids joining in.”

Mortlake Rose Show committee member Pam Walmsley said she was pleased to see some new faces getting involved this year.

“We had 10 exhibits from six first timers,” she said.

“It was quite lovely.

“We also had visitors stopping by from Cobden, Terang and Warrnambool.”
