THE wider Cobden and district community has helped raise more than $14,000 for the Run for the Kids initiative.

Earlier this month Thompson’s Hotel’s Michael Torpy and Belinda Davies organised a fundraiser in support of their grandson Max who was born in June 2022 and was diagnosed not long after with Rubenstein Taybi Syndrome.

Rubenstein Taybi Syndrome is so rare, there is thought to be only six children with the syndrome currently across the country.

At just nine months old Max has undergone 11 surgeries to date.

Young Max has been cared for by the doctors and The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne since he was born.

On Sunday, March 19 – which coincided with the Run for the Kids fun run in Melbourne - Mr Torpy l ran from Camperdown to Cobden.

In Melbourne on the same day, Max’s mum Sam was pushing him in his pram in the five kilometre event in Run for the Kids.

Locals also pounded the pavement in Cobden with a three kilometre fun run and walk held before residents bid up a storm at an auction held at Thommo’s with local businesses and individuals donating items to be auctioned.

Ms Davies was thrilled with the results.

“What a wonderful day for Max, Thommo’s and Cobden,” she said.

“Michael had four boys run the 10 kilometres with him, while around 40 did the walk.

“Nearly 100 people attended the auction, with all items sold.

“We have so much heart felt gratitude to everyone involved.”

As well as the 10km run and a local fun run/walk in Cobden, an auction was held raising funds for a cause close to Michael Torpy’s heart.
