Safety boost for cyclists

CAMPERDOWN Cycling Club has two new first aid kits thanks to a council grant.
A quick response grant from Corangamite Shire Council has enabled the club to purchase two comprehensive first aid kits.
This will allow the club to have one kit in the tail car (which follows the last rider in the race) and a second kit ready to respond to any incident reported during an event.
While the club does its best to mitigate risks on the road during events, with senior riders looking out for issues on-course, signage warning motorists that a bike race is occurring and the recent introduction of hi-vis vests, cycling can be dangerous.
The club reminds local drivers that races are held each Thursday at 5.30pm, with junior rides making their way to the start near the saleyards by 5pm.
As the race is handicapped, rides leave singularly or in small groups.
The course goes along Ballarat Road before turning left on to Old Geelong Road, with the finish line on Jellie Street.
Cars are encouraged to slow down and give riders some space to help keep everyone safe.
