Season begins for junior Bulls

ALL of Pomborneit’s junior cricket teams have now got their season underway, with the under 17 girls, under 16 boys, under 13 girls and under 13 boys all playing their first games for 2025/26.

On Friday night Pomborneit’s under 17 girls had a loss to Tomahawk Creek at Pomborneit.

The visitors batted first and were dismissed for 121 in the 20th over.

Marissa Whitehead led the Pomborneit bowlers with 2/6 from two overs, Isla Spokes took 2/10 from 2.2 overs with Lilli Saarikallio, Isabelle Pilley and Charlotte Henderson all taking a wicket each.

Pomborneit was dismissed for 25 in reply, opener Meg Nolan top scoring with a hard working seven from 20 balls.

The under 17 boys clash between Pomborneit and Colac was washed out on Tuesday night.

In the under 16 boys cricket, Pomborneit had a 148 run win over Heytesbury-Princetown at South Purrumbete on Sunday.

Batting first, the Bulls made 5/256 from their 35 overs.

Opener Josh Reynolds (50 retired from 42 balls) and number three Jonty Raven (51 retired from 42 balls) led the way for the Bulls, with George Sadler (36), Max Rees (48) and Hugo Saarikallio (23 not out) all contributing well to the strong total.

In reply the Storm proved hard to dismiss and batted out their overs, making 7/108.

Josh Reynolds with 2/7 from five overs and Crawford Dunn, in his first under 16 game, with 2/7 were the multiple wicket takers.

Max Rees, Bailey Fox and George Sadler took one wicket each.

Alongside Dunn, Wally Rees also made his under 16 debut and bowled two good overs.

In the under 14 boys game on Friday night, the junior Bulls had their first loss of the season with a 78 run loss at Birregurra.

Batting first, Pomborneit made 6/100 from their 30 overs.

Bailey Fox top scored with 31 from 21 balls, Noah Boyd made 19, Basil Hunt made 16, and Max Rahles-Rahbula and Lucas Place worked hard to reach the 24 ball retirement mark.

Birregurra proved too strong with the bat, making 8/178.

Jamie Gardiner took 2/10 from three overs, with Bailey Fox, Max Rahles-Rahbula, Wally Rees, Crawford Dunn, Lucas Place and Angus Murphy all taking a wicket each.

Pomborneit’s under 13 girls had a first up two run win over reigning premier Tomahawk Creek at Irrewillipe on Sunday.

Batting first, the home team made 8/117 from their 20 overs.

Opening bowler Emily Reynolds led the way with 3/13 from four overs, with Zoe Unwin and club debutante Matilda Kerr taking a wicket each.

Pomborneit scraped over the line, making 8/119 in reply.

Scarlett Whitehead top scored with 18, Emily Reynolds made 16, Pippa Murphy made 12 and Zoe Unwin 11 in the win.

In the under 13 boys on Monday night, the junior Bulls had a first up loss to Bookaar at Pomborneit on Monday night.

Pomborneit fielded five debutantes, with Nathan Walters, George Baulch, Hamish Bishop, Jack Hillman and Billy Hillman all appearing in maroon and gold for the very first time.

The visitors batted first, making 112 from their 24 overs.

In reply, Pomborneit made 5/89.

Captain Bailey Fox made 20 retired from 18 balls, with Jerry Wain batting well for 10.

Mateo Boyd hit nine from 13 balls, with Hamish Christensen and Jamie Gardiner retiring on eight from 17 balls and five from 18 balls respectively.

In this week’s junior games, Pomborneit’s under 17 boys play Apollo Bay at Pomborneit on Tuesday, the under 17 girls play Irrewarra Black at CSC Oval tonight and the under 16 boys play Cobden at Pomborneit on Sunday.

The under 14 boys play City United Purple at Pomborneit tonight, the under 13 girls play Irrewarra at CSC Oval on Sunday while the under 13 boys play Boorcan at Boorcan on Monday.
