Second quarter costly for Pies
A SECOND quarter lapse proved costly for the Magpies last weekend.

A SECOND quarter lapse proved costly for the Magpies last weekend.
Coming off the bye round, the Pies were keen to snatch a win away from Leura Oval but it was not to be – with neighbouring rivals Cobden proving too strong.
Camperdown coach Neville Swayn said while his side was unable to take the win, going down by just 16 points on the final siren, he was happy with the team’s performance.
“Overall I think the boys did a pretty good job, it was really just the second quarter that hurt us,” Swayn said.
“Our concentration lapsed, which let Cobden kick four goals and we didn’t convert on the board at all which meant we went into the break 25 points behind.”
The third term saw the Magpies add two goals, one behind while restricting the Bombers to just two goals, three.
“We had all the momentum in the final term but unfortunately just couldn’t convert and take advantage of our opportunities,” Swayn said.
“And that let us down too. In the past we’ve been struggling in the last quarter but on Saturday we had a lot of the ball but didn’t capitalise – we had nine scoring shots to three in the last.”
While he was happy with the overall team effort, Swayn made particular mention of Archie McBean in his first senior game.
“Archie broke his collar bone in a practice match but before then had had a great pre-season,” Swayn said.
“He has been playing reserves the last few weeks but on Saturday stepped into the senior side and I thought he had a great game on the backline; he was consistent all day.”
“Charlie Lucas also had a good game, along with Sam Gordon up forward.”
Along with Gordon, goals also went to Toby Kent and Charlie Lucas.
Among the best for Camperdown were Archie McBean, Joshua Place, Charlie Lucas, Sam Gordon and Zach Sinnott.
In the reserves, Camperdown was defeated 2.5.17 to 13.13.91.
Lachlan Swayn and Nick Jones kicked goals for the Magpies while Jones, Shane Morgan, Zachary Harrop-Anderson, Leigh Ball and Dominic Absalom were named among the best.
Camperdown will take on third-placed Portland under lights at Leura Oval tomorrow.
“Portland will certainly make it tough for us but we’ll go into the game as prepared as we can. If we can keep improving and can string four quarters of good footy together, another win won’t be too far away.”
