Semi final loss for Knights
COBDEN’S first ever finals campaign in the Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association’s women’s competition has come to an end after a five wicket loss to Hawkesdale in Sunday’s semi final.

“We went in with the attitude that we had nothing to lose” Cobden coach Craig Hanks said.
“They’re a very good team, we threw everything at them.”
Sent into bat at the Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve, the Knights scored 9/100 from their 30 overs. Cobden raced to 30 in five overs before Abbie Hanks was run out for 18 from 22 balls.
Two more quick wickets fell before the Ingrid Bellman settled in.
“Ingrid batted really well, she steadied the ship for us.”
Bellman scored 33 from 57 balls, with two fours and a six.
Mikayla Hein contributed 15 from 19 balls as the Knights batted out their 30 overs.
“It was pleasing to bat out 30 overs, though we struggled to score in the final 10 overs.”
Hawkesdale batted well in reply, passing Cobden’s score in the 19th over for the loss of five wickets, with star player Jasmine Bowater top scoring with 44 from 31 balls.
“Jasmine is a quality player, she smacked us around a bit.
“She got her runs in a hurry and changed the game for them.”
Jacque Dickson led the Cobden bowlers with 4/18 from 4.5 overs.
“Jacque bowled really well, she was unlucky not to get five wickets.
“She got a wicket with a no-ball and the winning runs were scored off a dropped catch from her bowling.”
Despite the loss, Hanks is thrilled with his team’s development.
“The girls have been terrific, they’ve worked very hard all year and have been very receptive to everything we do at training.”
“They play for fun but have really learnt how to compete as well.”
With a young list, Hanks expects further improvement to come over the next few years.
“The beauty of our group is that they’re all locals.
“It’s been a tremendous season, we’ve built a fantastic culture, we’re really excited for the years ahead.”
