Senior celebration proves a hit

THE Terang Harness Racing Club has rolled out the red carpet for seniors in a concept which proved so popular, it could become an annual fixture.

The club held its first Seniors Day event last Wednesday, which saw a crowd of around 110 dodge the conditions to enjoy the warmth and good food in the upstairs dining room.

“We thought, having a day meeting, it was a good opportunity,” club president Chris O’Connor said.

“We only have around one day meeting per year so getting some of the seniors out and upstairs, making a bit of a fuss of them, would make for a great day.

“We had sausage rolls, sandwiches, slices and things like that with a cup of tea for a minimal price.

“It helps us get people to the trots, which we really enjoy, and it also gives them a good day out.”

Mr O’Connor said the number of attendees and their seal of approval through positive feedback had shown the day was such a success that the club will explore making Seniors Day an annual event.

“We’re quite interested in doing it again next year because it was so well accepted, even though the day was a shocker in terms of the weather,” he said.

“We did have some who were unable to come due to the weather but lots of people made the effort to come out despite the conditions, and I think they had a great day.”

The club will now take a break, following what Mr O’Connor said was a successful season, before returning in early August.

“Our next meeting will be August 4, which is back to a night meeting – open for everyone with free entry, and bookings can be made for upstairs,” he said.

“We’re ploughing along quite well – last week was our last meeting for the season and we’re really happy.

“We’re coming off quite a successful period.

“Some times were hard while we were in growth mode – it was a bit clunky at times, but it’s good to get back to a normal training year with nice crowds and finishing off the year on a successful note.

“We’ll have 10 race meetings next season, with the cup as our main meeting set for March 27 on a Friday.”
