The changeover took place on July 1.

Among the deputy controllers included deputy controller training Trevor Robertson, deputy controller operations Jeff Mason and deputy controller public relations and finance Sue Sartori.

Mr Price said this wasn’t his first time wearing the controller hat, having volunteered with the SES for many years.

“Matt was the controller for four years and I did it for five or six before that,” he said.

“I’ve been with the SES just over 23 years.

“When Apex closed I was looking for something to fill in that gap.

“The SES has brought me friendship and a sense of community.”

Ms Sartori said she was grateful to Mr Price for taking on the role.

“We’re really happy Jeff has stepped up again,” she said.

“It’s lots of work and we’ve all got specialised roles as his backup.”

As controller, Ms Sartori said Mr Price was responsible for the entire unit.

“He has to answer all the calls and emails,” she said.

“It’s a big job. It’s the ultimate responsibility.”
