Sewells celebrating new look
A CENTURY-LONG link to the south west region is being celebrated with SLM Law’s rebranding embracing its proud history.

SLM Law is now known as Sewells Lawyers, reflecting the way locals already refer to the long-established law firm.
Sewells Lawyers director Bec Alexander said while the name of the firm had changed, the friendly service and hard-working team at the Camperdown, Cobden and Colac branches remained the same.
“So many people around the region already call us Sewells, so the new name makes a lot of sense,” she said.
“The new name also means a renovated Camperdown office and a new website, but the most important part, our people, remains the same.
“Whether it is ABC or XYZ, most people don’t talk in lettering and acronyms.
“They know us as Sewells, and from this month, that’s exactly what we’ll be: Sewells Lawyers.”
The SLM name only dates back to 2006 and is a mash-up of the names Sewells, Larkins, McCarthy - surnames of lawyers who founded some of south west Victoria’s best-known legal institutions.
“Our firm has links back to the early years of Camperdown, Cobden and Colac history,” Ms Alexander said.
“We had a look at the history books and
the firm Sewell and Sewell dates back to about 1920.
“We are proud of the many families that make up the Sewells heritage and proudly display historical items relating to the Buckland, Nevett, Larkins and McCarthy families around our three offices.”
Ms Alexander is one of the three owners of Sewells Lawyers, alongside Meagan Compton and Shaun Moloney.
“Sometimes people ask why it isn’t our names on the front of the business, but it's not about us: that's not how we operate,” she said.
“We’re all about the community first and Sewells is such a great community name.”
Known for years by locals at the Buckland and Nevett building, the historic Sewells Lawyers office in Pike Street has recently undergone renovations as part of the law firm makeover.
An event, to be held today (Friday), will celebrate the works being completed.
Shaun Moloney said there were two main reasons for the celebration.
“One is that we’ve just finished some renovations at the Camperdown office,” he said.
“We’ve added on an extension to the back and upgraded the facilities available here.
“Also we rebranded to Sewells Lawyers about a couple of weeks ago.
“We had an event in Colac recently for that, and just doing a smaller event here for our Camperdown clients and partners that we work closely with.”
Mr Moloney said the company was “pretty excited” about the rebranding.
“It’s something we’ve been looking to do for a little while and it sort of ties in with the fact that we’ve upgrades our website and done some renovations both here and in Colac,” he said.
