CRAFTS and chats were aplenty last Saturday when Camperdown’s Clocktower Quilters held a Sew for Cancer event at the Camperdown Golf Club.

Members of the group worked on their quilting and other craft projects while sharing snacks and conversations, with tea and coffee provided.

Clocktower Quilters secretary and treasurer Carol Wilson said the Clocktower Quilters raised $500 for Cancer Council, which is lower than last year’s total of $800.

“We didn’t get that much this year, but they’re very thankful for what we raise for them,” she said.

“We send it to the cancer centre in Warrnambool to help with their fundraising.

“This is the only fundraiser we do for cancer; we don’t do much fundraising.

“We make community quilts, made by our members, and we raffle them to make money to pay for the quilting; the quilting is the most expensive part of the quilt, and most of us use our own material to make our quilts.

“We’ve given away 107 quilts in four years to those in need.”

Ms Wilson said the event came about due to previous members of the Clocktower Quilters dying from cancer over the years.

“We decided we should have a day where we could come and just sit and sew,” she said.

“Everyone brings food to share and we raise money for the Cancer Council.”

Ms Wilson wanted to extend her thanks to Camperdown Golf Club for loan of the function room for the event.
