Shave for a cause
BENNY Schaap will be taking a razor to his hair for an important cause next Friday.
Mr Schaap will shave his head to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer as part of an upcoming night market.
He said he made the decision to shave as he knows people who suffer from the disease.
“A couple of people I know, that I care about, have got prostate cancer,” he said.
“They were looking to raise some money for prostate cancer research, and I said I’ll shave my head and my beard if that helps.”
Mr Schaap said he doesn’t have a specific funraising target, but an auction will be held prior to the shave.
The highest bidder of the auction will win the honour of being the one to shave his hair.
Mr Schaap encouraged men to make appointments to get their prostate checked.
“In the south west, we seem to have a very high rate of prostate cancer, percentage wise, more than other places,” he said.
“It’s going to affect a lot of people, so I guess to raise awareness and get fellas to get their prostates checked.
“Don’t be shy; go to the doctor and get it checked. Even if you don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with you; you’ll have cancer and you wouldn’t know it.
“Sometimes by the time you know, and you get symptoms, it’s too late.”
