Shire looks at vision report card

CORANGAMITE Shire councillors received an update on the Corangamite Community Vision 2040.

At last month’s Ordinary Meeting of Council councillors looked over progress towards the plan’s goals, with the plan needing to be updated every four years.

In her report to council, director sustainable development Justine Linley said the Corangamite Community Vision provides a strategic director for council’s long-term planning for the municipality.

The vision identified four interconnected themes: future proofing, people, liveability and lifestyle, and prosperity and innovation.

Mrs Linley said the end of term review of the Corangamite Community Vision 2040 provided an opportunity for council to check the alignment of the council plan and budget with the aspirations and hopes of the broader Corangamite community.

“While not required in the act, it is good practice and ensures that the vision is not relegated to being a compliance document that sits on a shelf but instead is actively consulted and referred to as part of council’s daily work,” she said.

“The review has confirmed tangible progress towards all four objectives but with a strong focus throughout the term on themes two and tree, particularly in relation to housing, transport and community infrastructure projects and sound planning for future growth.

“Conversely the review has highlighted that themes one and four are broader and more aspirational in their scope and will require a concentration of effort to develop strategies and plan for projects that contribute towards these objectives - particularly in the areas of climate change, sustainability and whole of community wellbeing.

“On this basis it is proposed that those themes in particular be considered for further investigation as part of forthcoming work on a refresh of the Corangamite Vision 2040.”

Cr Laurie Hickey said the vision was a “important piece of work” and acknowledged it would take some “considerable amount of years to achieve”.

“It’s important to recognise that there were 33 people that put their hand up way back in 2021…and they met mostly online due to the terrible pandemic we were experiencing at the time,” he said.

“They come up with a fabulous report.

“I’d say this report is progressing reasonably well given there is still a vision and still a way to go.”

Cr Ruth Gstrein echoed Cr Hickey’s sentiments.

“Yes, we are only four years into this plan and there’s quite a long way to go,” she said.

“A lot of the activities when you’re reading through the list have already been completed.

“It is an aspirational document.”
