Voters will head to the ballot box on Saturday, May 3 – but no matter the result, Corangamite Shire Council will aim to secure funding for its lengthy list of priorities.

Corangamite Shire mayor councillor Kate Makin said, when the new Parliament is sworn in, council will continue to lobby for crucial investment in the local community.

“We’re the highest milk producing Local Government Area in Australia but there is a shortage of high-quality, serviced industrial land to attract manufacturers and turn our agricultural output into more jobs,” she said.

“That’s why we will be seeking $30 million for the infrastructure and servicing works at the Camperdown Production Precinct.”

Cr Makin said the childcare crisis in south west Victoria would also be on the table.

“We will call on whoever is in Federal Government to fund new facilities, or incentivise private operators to invest in regional communities where there might be little or no profit,” she said.

“We are also calling on all candidates to prioritise policies that improve housing affordability and lower energy costs.

“Modern, affordable housing is required to attract a population which will secure future demand for local services.

“Cheaper energy incentives will also take the pressure off households.”

Roads will also be a hot ticket item with funding sought for upgrades to Darlington-Camperdown Road, Darlington-Terang Road and Lavers Hill-Cobden Road all on the agenda.

Council is also calling on candidates to commit to providing, $4.5 million to redevelop the Theatre Royal complex in Camperdown as a hub for innovation, skills and creative industries, and $750,000 to plan and design the Port Campbell to Twelve Apostles/Princetown trail.

Council representatives have met with candidates Bernadine Atkinson (Independent), Alex Dyson (Independent), Kate Gazzard (Greens) and Fiona Mackenzie (Labor).

Now the election has been called, council will also meet with incumbent Dan Tehan (Liberal) to discuss the shire’s priorities.
