CAMPERDOWN cyclist Grace Brown has taken out silver in the World Road Cycling Championships in Wollongong.

The championships attracted a quality field of 45 women from across the globe for the elite women’s individual time trial last weekend.

Brown set the early pace with a blistering time of 44:41.33 over the technical 34.2 kilometre course in and around the town centre.

She was one of the early Sunday morning starters and no-one could touch her until defending champion Dutch ace Ellen van Dijk and Swiss Marlen Reusser, the last two starters, took to the course.

Van Dijk and Reusser were both quicker than Brown at the first check but the Swiss rider faded.

Reusser finished 41.68 seconds off Brown’s time, however, Van Dijk was 12.79 seconds under it – claiming gold in a time of 44:28.6.

Brown described the ride as one of her best, stating she was “happy to have local crowds cheering my name because that really helped push me on the course.”

Brown’s silver was Australia’s second in the event following Anna Wilson in 1999.
