On Friday, club members celebrated Simpson and District Lions Club’s 30th anniversary of charter.

In March 1994, 26 interested people attended the first meetings to get Lions established in Simpson.

Club member Marie Van Den Broek said 30 years later, the club was proud to say members in the Simpson and District Lions Club were still being productive and fulfilling a great role in our community.

“The celebrations began at the Historical Park in Simpson, where many of our invited guests gathered to witness the unveiling of a Memorial Wall for members of Simpson and District Lions who have passed whilst in service with the club,” she said.

“Some of these members were pioneers for the development of our township and community, others only had a shorter opportunity to serve.

“With the plaques now visible to all, we commemorate Trudy Wetemans, Max Williams, Les Whitall, Peter O’Connor, Margaret Morris and Trevor McKenzie.”

Celebrations continued on at the Simpson Hall, where a display of photos and memorabilia gave those in attendance a chance to glance at the club’s history and the activities members have got up to in the years past.

Mrs Van Den Broek said past district governor from 1994, Doug Lyons, was present, as were two other past district governors and members from neighbouring clubs.

“Sponsoring club, Timboon’s Guiding Lion Colin Kee and our first president and secretary, Alf Frith and Maureen Capizzi, were on hand to cut the cake,” she said.

“Many of our visitors reflected on the projects in the early years.

“Some commenting on the major works of getting the Simpson Dam being a more functional space for public use.

“Seeing all the improvements that has been ongoing through the time since, they were amazed and very happy with how much had been done.”

Mrs Van Den Broek said those attending reminisced about activities that they were passionate about when they were members.

“The amazing social times that were enjoyed and their favourite stories were told whilse enjoying the delicious finger food supplied by 3M Catering,” she said.

“It was a terrific night, I’m so glad that those that attended were all made to feel so welcome, and had a chance to catch up with friends from the club from many years ago.”
