Western District Newspapers reported artist Jimmy Dvate began work on the mural on Wednesday, October 15, taking two weeks to transform the wall facing the car parking area into an artwork.

Mr Dvate is known for his murals of endangered Australian flora and fauna which can be seen on silos, water tanks and walls across Victoria.

He said he feels “really good” about how the mural has come together.

“I’ve been getting great feedback from locals while I was working on it, and now it’s finished I’ve been getting a lot of photos from people who have travelled from Ballarat or Melbourne over the long weekend to see it,” Mr Dvate said.

“I hope it brightens their day, makes them smile and makes them more aware of the species which live in the area.

It’s one of the things I love about public art – it’s interactive, so it’s not like you’re painting in your studio alone.

“I’ve had people from the aged care home and the hospital come over every day – some would come past on their daily walks to check my progress.

“The local kindergarten kids came down around four times, which was great because they got to see it from the start, as it took shape and right at the end.”

The mural includes the yellow-faced honeyeater, the Major Mitchell’s cockatoo, the platypus and the sugar glider – all of which can be seen in the Skipton area.

Mr Dvate said he has been thrilled with the engagement from the community, with many residents visiting him while he worked on the mural.

“Thank you to the Skipton community for all your support,” he said.

“It’s been a great project, and hopefully I’ll get a chance to come back and do some more at some point.”
