Skipton to mark spring
WITH spring in the air, Skipton is gearing up for its third annual Skipton Spring Festival with fun for all ages on the program.
The event – slated for Sunday, November 9 – is set to see a strong variety of activities for all ages, celebrating the Skipton district and the local community.
Organiser and member of the Skipton Progress Association Dale McIntyre said there was a lot on offer for this year’s festival, which is 100 per cent run by volunteers.
“We’ve got a butterfly display coming from the Royal Botanical Zoo in Melbourne, a jumping castle for young people, a gentleman doing a whip cracking demonstration, a drone display, a petting zoo and we’ve got 20 different games for the children to play,” he said.
“We may have around 60 vintage and classic cars, including trucks – I know of four car clubs who have confirmed their attendance, with many more likely coming outside of car clubs. 0.
“We’ve got students’ art from Skipton Primary School, Lismore Primary School, Rokewood Primary School and Willaura Primary School – it will be inside the Skipton Golf and Bowls Club.
“Last year it was a big success – it was unbelievable to see some of the talent that has come out of the country.”
The Skipton Photography Club will also be hosting an exhibition at the festival.
Other children’s activities on offer include face painting, a rubber boot competition, a mini-golf course, a putting competition and an arts and crafts workshop.
Mr McIntyre said 24 vendors have signed up for the festival, including around 10 food vendors.
“We’ll have some blade shearing, and we’re going to have several ladies doing spinning and knitting demonstrations,” he said.
“There will be plenty of opportunities for different kinds of meals there – from sausage sizzles to Korean food.
“Everyone will also go into the draw to win $200 lucky gate prize, which will be drawn on the day.
“There will also be a raffle for $2 per ticket, with the prize being a 57-seat coach for 200 kilometres and a day.
“There’s also a beautiful painting by Keith Nahill, as well as a night’s accommodation at the Melbourne Hotel and Spa for third prize.”
Local bands will provide live music at the Skipton Golf and Bowls Club throughout the day.
Mr McIntyre said he hoped people came along for the free event, which will run from 10am-4pm.
“We have some very generous sponsors who have raised funds for the festival, including the Corangamite Shire Council,” he said.
“They have done a wonderful job as usual – with any major events in the shire, they’re fabulous.
“Farmers will get some benefit as well – the gentleman running the drones does farm mapping and farm soil identification.”
