Slugs close to boil-over
BOTTOM side Slugs came within a point of a major upset over second-placed Stallions in the final round of Corangamite volleyball.
The bell sounded just before Slugs had the chance to serve for the match.
While a win would have lifted them out of wooden spoon territory, the loss meant they now have to hold the dreaded honour until next season; Autumn 2024.
There is one opportunity for Slugs to redeem themselves, when they play Bullbusters in the B grade challenge final.
For the first time in the competition’s history, four teams have qualified to play in the A grade finals, leaving Slugs and Ballbusters to fight out the B grade match.
While Poachers finished 12 points clear on top, the next teams – Stallions, Bulls and NOBTS – were neck and neck in positions two, three and four.
Any of these sides could take out the A grade premiership without surprising anyone.
The A grade semi-finals and the final are certain to provide a high standard of volleyball.
Results from round nine:
Poachers def NOBTS 2-1, Poachers def Ballbusters 4-0, Stallions def Slugs 2-1, Stallions def Bulls 2-1, Bulls def Ballbusters 3-1 and NOBTS def Slugs 3-1.
Ladder: Poachers 58, Stallions 46, Bulls 42, NOBTS 38, Ballbusters 12 and Slugs 12.
