Small service sees strong crowd
RESIDENTS in Derrinallum and Lismore came together last Saturday to mark Anzac Day, with between 80-100 people attending the service in the Main Street.
The service was bathed in unseasonal sunshine as residents paid their respects at the cenotaph.
Derrinallum, Lismore and surrounds Returned and Services League (RSL) president Charlene Knight said the service saw a strong presence from students at Derrinallum P-12 College and Lismore Primary School.
“For the second year, students from Derrinallum P-12 College and Lismore Primary School took up the majority of the speaking responsibilities for the service,” she said.
“All students spoke with strong confidence – they should be very proud of themselves as I know the town, schools and their families are extremely proud and impressed with them all.
“Eddie Gellie from Derrinallum P-12 College and Ivy Moyle and Abbie Corrie from Lismore Primary school all read different poems – ‘Take a Minute’, ‘Anzac Poem’ and ‘In Flanders Field’.
“Neave Thompson and Natasha Henderson from Derrinallum P-12 College wrote their own speeches, both speaking about past family members who were involved in World War One.”
Ms Knight expressed her gratitude to everyone who attended the service, as well as everyone who provided support in the days leading up to the event.
“As always, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the locals and people passing through town who attended the service, the businesses in Derrinallum and Lismore for allowing the RSL to sell the badges and the people who support the RSL and veterans by purchasing badges,” she said.
“Thanks to the students for speaking, Melissa Wallace for donating Anzac biscuits for the third year, the history rooms for hosting morning tea and the members of the RSL for setting up and packing away.”
